Subarray adaptive beamforming for reducing the impact of flow noise on sonar performance

چکیده
The performance of a hull-mounted sonar array is adversely affected by the presence of own-ship self noises such as propeller noise, machinery noise and flow noise. Among those self noises, the effect of flow noise can be very difficult to combat due to its near-field and non-stationary nature. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of using two stage subarray adaptive beamforming for reducing the impact of flow noise. Two subarray adaptive beamforming schemes are considered. These are adaptive-conventional and adaptive-adaptive beamforming. The performances of these two schemes are evaluated against the performance of a full array adaptive beamformer which provides a benchmark in terms of the array gain. In the study, we model the flow noise as a stream of moving quadrupoles. The investigation shows that subarray beamforming is able to achieve higher array gains than a full array adaptive beamformer. The reasons for this are analysed. It is found that the time required for full array adaptive beamforming to converge is too long in a fast time-varying environment.

Subarray Beamforming for Reducing the Effect of Flow Noise on Sonar Arrays
Subarray beamforming has been identified as a signal processing technique to potentially reduce the effect of aerodynamically induced flow noise against a target signal which is difficult to target with full array beamforming due to its near-field and non-stationary nature. Previously the technique had been proposed yet was not fully investigated nor adequately compared to its full array adapti...

This thesis addresses the use of adaptive beamforming and imaging methods applied to active sonar. While adaptive beamformers are known to offer improved performance when applied to passive sonars, their use is limited in active sonar systems. In this thesis, we investigate the potential performance gains of using adaptive beamforming methods for a range of active sonar applications. Key challe...
متن کاملAdaptive Beamforming for Sonar Audio
Sonar audio is a major tool used by sonar operators to assist in classifying acoustic contacts. In this paper we discuss some issues that arise when adaptive beamforming is used for sonar audio. Frequency domain beamforming is used to reduce computational cost, and diagonal loading of the cross-spectral matrix is used to obtain the best quality output. The effectiveness of a robust Capon beamfo...

The full-field modeling of matched field processing (MFP) provides potentially large gains over traditional beamformers in passive sonar signal processing. MFP localization gains are manifested by superior estimation of source range and novel estimation of source depth. However, MFP localization is limited in practice by high spatial ambiguities in the MFP output. These ambiguities can result i...

.A beamspace adaptive beamformer implementation for the rejection of cable strum self-noise on passive sonar towed arrays is presented. The approach focuses on the implementation of a white noise gain constraint based on the scaled projection technique due to Cox et al. [IEEE Trans. on ASSP, Vol. 35 (10), Oct. 1987]. The objective is to balance the aggressive adaptation necessary for nulling th...
